The first settler came to America seeking freedom and refuge from religious persecution in 1607. From there, Americans would continue to fight for their independence from Great Britain until successfully reclaiming it in 1776. America became the land of opportunity, founded for freedom and a place of refuge from poverty and persecution. How can a country forget its roots so quickly? The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has enabled thousands of young immigrants to realize their American dreams. Who are we to take it away from them? Dreamers are no different than the founding fathers of our country; they both want a better life. DACA offers countless opportunities to those seeking a second chance and should not be tampered with. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on "Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned"? Get an original essay The United States was built on the foundation of equality through freedom. Famous monuments, such as the Statue of Liberty, were built to commemorate and signify what America represents. The Statue of Liberty stands tall and proud for all to see as her “beacon hand shines with welcome across the world” and her “silent lips” cry “give me… your huddled masses yearning to breathe free… I raise my my lamp by the golden door." (Source A, Lazarus) If DACA were removed, what message about America would it send? The time and dedication put forth by our country's founders would be lost. Immigrants come for various reasons, like religious freedom, escape from oppression, and/or better business opportunities; everyone is fighting to improve the lives of themselves and their children. Doesn't that sound familiar? from taking a lollipop away from a child. Why would anyone want to take something so loved from someone so innocent? Monuments built to represent America would no longer hold its meaning and would become unfulfilled promises. That “big old flag” flying its red, white and blue colors would remind people of the freedom they have in America, but only if they can get here somehow. The Liberty Bell ringing freedom across America for all to hear would become nothing more than a huge rusty bell. Maybe there's a reason it's broken. Why have so many expectations that cannot be met? Revoking DACA would diminish everything America stands for. The media greatly influences the way people think. Television manipulates people's perception through comedic or romantic ways. Because of this, negative images of immigrants are portrayed in subtle ways that we don't even notice. The mainstream media portrays immigrants as greedy, coming to America only to steal jobs and “marry for green cards.” (Source B, Perez-Zerb) The characters are developed based on stereotypes such as Latinas being the housekeepers or Asians being the nerd who ironically knows kung fu in times of trouble. Not to mention the lack of adequate representation for people of color and common cases of whitewashing in Hollywood. Latinos had to create their own awards show, American Latino Media Arts (ALMA), to properly promote themselves. Even so-called credible news agencies start the day with bias. There's never been a Grammy Award-winning movie about a young immigrant who comes to America legally through a program like DACA, instead there's a long, tear-jerking backstory of what they're like.
