Some injustices have been occurring for decades, while others appear to be new issues. One of the social injustice issues that people are facing today is the numerous issues surrounding transgender people. Although transgender people have existed for many years, issues regarding their rights are relatively new. Now that society has become more accepting of the LGBTQ movement, or at least more aware, transgender individuals have been thrust into the spotlight. Say no to plagiarism. Although this issue has been out of the spotlight for some time, it still remains a problem, especially in rural communities that lack adequate facilities. In the city where I live we still have problems, not with their rights, but with space. Essentially, transgender students would like to use the bathrooms of their chosen gender, not their birth sex. While some others would like to at least have gender-neutral bathrooms. Policies regarding bathrooms First of all, one of the problems lies not in the policies themselves, but more in the wording and use of “sex” instead of “gender”. For example, schools receiving Title students of the opposite sex (Watkins & Moreno, 2017, p.166). This ruling excludes transgender students because it bases the rule on sex, not gender. Herein lie some of the problems. Because sex, rather than gender, is listed, some states and school districts are struggling with having to provide adequate facilities. This also allows community members to challenge these ideas because of how unclear the bill is regarding gender or students' chosen gender. Effects on the Community I believe this debate about transgender bathrooms has had a positive effect on our community. I think it brought to light some issues that a lot of people didn't see in their lives. This is such a small community I live in with only about 9,000 people. However, we have transgender students, so this is an issue that needs to be addressed. Advocating for social justice As a worker at the school, I was already advocating for this injustice. I work at a local at-risk school, which resides in one of the older school buildings in the community. This building, being as old as it is, only has male and female bathrooms. The staff bathrooms are also set up this way. There is no option for a unisex bathroom. We don't have changing rooms to worry about, at the same time there are no changing rooms to change. This must be done in the bathrooms. Fortunately, in our school, when a transgender student arrived, all the other students accepted him. I spoke on behalf of the students before they arrived about how they felt and the school's policy of letting the student choose. That student chose to use the bathroom of his birth sex and all students agreed with this. However, they are/10.1080/00098655.2017.1361285
