Topic > My Career Choice in Counseling

During my childhood, teachers, parents and sometimes strangers always asked me, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” I would freeze for a second and quickly say “A doctor” or “A firefighter”. Now, as I'm writing the introduction to this essay, I'm not entirely sure why I should be so quick to jump into that specific profession, but there it is, so quick for me to grab it. I finally realized my goal later in my teenage years of wanting to pursue a career in consulting. It has always been part of my plans since my teenage years, but I wasn't 100% positive. From my first summer job until my final year of high school, most of my extracurricular activities involve counseling and/or children or teenagers younger than my age or a little younger than me. Finding out that I can make a positive impact on a child's life is rewarding for me and truly a blessing and that's when I finally noticed my career after high school. “People begin to heal the moment they feel heard. Most children and adolescents who face abuse in their place of residence carry with them that fear and attitude that can be resolved through counseling. Most counselors who work with abused children primarily try to focus on trying to process their feelings and emotions related to the abuse. Counseling sessions usually take place in an individual situation, but family is an absolute must, having an abused child is 60% to implement. Hitting, punching, and/or kicking are the most common types of physical abuse reported against a child. Unfortunately there are many other cases of abuse, such as emotional abuse. Emotional abuse involves yelling, name-calling, and anything hurtful towards the child. Another type of child abuse is sexual in nature. For example, a child may be forced to have sexual intercourse with another person or photographed. The most common child abusers began to be touched without one's consent. Neglect is also another form of child abuse. In my future career there are four different stages of abuse, I will deal with physical abuse which involves intentional assault on a child. The second is emotional and psychological abuse, which is very harsh behavior that causes the child or adolescent mental torment that damages the child's mind. The third is abandonment, the absence of the parent, the lack of attention, care and shelter. Finally, sexual abuse means any type of sexual behavior aimed at the child or adolescent by force. I chose this profession to help children and adolescents of all ages. Many children are abused every day and don't have a friend or mother to talk to about their problems. This generation tends to ignore children and adolescents and put their problems aside and act as if their problems are not a problem..
