The Cold War was a conflict between capitalist nations and communist nations after World War II. The main reason the Cold War began was an ideological power struggle between atheistic communism and democratic capitalism. The main players were the former Soviet Union (communism) and the United States (capitalism). The Cold War began in 1948 after Germany was divided between the Western Allies and the Soviets. What motivates a nation to engage in world affairs is the idea that it wants other nations to adopt the same form of government. North Korea, with the support of the Soviet Union, attacked South Korea because it wanted South Korea to become communist. In June 1950, North Korea (which was receiving heavy aid from the Soviets) launched a massive attack on South Korea.
