Topic > Leadership Style Essay - 950

The idea of what is morally right and wrong changes within every culture, whether it is an organizational culture or between individuals. However, the best leaders are those who do what is right and best for the organization. Throughout this research paper I will try to define the term leadership style and its concept. Furthermore, I will try to describe three leadership styles, the development and the process one would follow to change their leadership style. As for myself, I have never seen myself as a leader, but I will try to describe my leadership style and the advantages and disadvantages I would have in a corporate environment. Before defining the leadership style, it is necessary to define exactly what leadership is? There are many interpretations of leadership and leadership styles, but a common term related to leadership is the ability to influence others to achieve a common goal or vision. Leadership is not an innate characteristic, but a complex set of skills, personal attributes, and vision that requires development through education, exposure to work and problems, role modeling, and mentorship with existing leaders. (Huges, Ginnett, Curphy, 1999) Edwin T. Cornelius III defined leadership style as the broad and distinctive way in which a leader interacts with others in various situations and occasions. (Cornelius, 2006) However, many researchers would agree that leadership style is simply a characteristic trait and can change within an organization or between different situations. Annick M. Brennen in an article states: A study of leadership styles is therefore primarily concerned with the way in which the leader carries out his functions or leadership roles, the use of authority and power and the approach to decision making . .... middle of paper ...... The leadership model suggests that it is a good way to move forward in a world where values are increasingly important and where servant leaders can achieve power through their values, ideals and ethics. In today's society this particular learning style can be effective in creating a positive company culture and can lead to high morale among team members. The only challenge I might have is slow decision making when trying to include members in the decision making process. However, the advantage is that I would work with team members to make decisions which in return should increase their productivity because they are more involved in the process. Democratic leadership is also my favorite style because I am more of a team player than an autocratic leader. I wouldn't ask my followers to do any tasks, I prefer to motivate them to succeed.
