Topic > Challenges Adolescents Face Due to Both Biology and Society

Challenges Faced by AdolescentsAdolescence is a transition period between ages 13 and 19, after childhood but before adulthood. Adolescence can be a difficult time in a teenager's life. Many teens don't know how to react or adapt to all the physical, social, and psychological changes that occur during this time. Some teenagers go through this period without problems, while for others it is a time of torture, discomfort and anxiety. With all the biological and social pressures that occur during adolescence, many adolescents fail to assume their own identity. Sometimes family and society do not help to facilitate this task. Challenges that teenagers face due to biology and society are body image, hormonal changes, social and parental pressures, family problems, school pressures, alcohol, drug abuse, homosexuality and suicide. First of all, most young people are dissatisfied with their physical appearance. Teenagers are more likely to have a lot of problems accepting their bodies. They may not like the way they look in the mirror, so they want to look like someone else. Watching the media and the environment all influence body image issues. When some teenagers see their friends around them and all the supermodels and stars on TV with their perfect bodies and skin, teenagers want to look like them. Adolescents are often associated with extreme behavior and engage in practices that could be described as dangerous. They try drastic ideas they find on the Internet or by taking medications. These body image issues can lead to eating disorders, anxiety, depression, and lack of self-confidence (Gregoire, 2013). Subsequently, many changes occur during adolescence. Boys develop beards, their voices become deeper, and they ... middle of paper ... during that time tend to punish their children if they do something wrong instead of listening carefully to what their children have to say or what they are going through. Societal support can also offer help to teenagers during their turbulent growing up period. In conclusion, adolescents may experiment with alcohol, drugs, sexual intercourse, or other dangerous behaviors. Some psychological disorders may appear during adolescence, such as depression and anxiety, unless parents or family support them. Society can help adolescents in this turbulent period of growth by creating some programs in schools for all adolescents who do not have support. Even those who have support such as family or friends need to know they have someone else to talk to and be able to express themselves. The teenage years are very difficult and teenagers need a lot of support.
