Most of the time, people try to deny the existence of racism because of the progress we have made. President Barack Obama recently said, “The legacy of slavery, of Jim Crow, of discrimination in almost every institution of our lives, casts a long shadow and is still part of our DNA that is passed down. We are not cured of it: racism, we are not cured of it. It's not just a matter of not being polite in saying "nigger" in public. This is not the measure to establish whether racism still exists or not. It's not just a matter of blatant discrimination. Societies don't completely erase everything that happened 2-300 years earlier." Racism isn't just "being mean to someone because of their race." They are the institutions and legal systems that place one race below another and generally create a negative bias for that group. A friend of mine once said, “Racism is not just in the death of black people, but in people looking for a reason to justify their death.” Stereotyping, microaggressions, cultural appropriation, police brutality, and racial profiling are just a few examples of the endless discrimination seen in our culture
