The Vietnamese family consists of parents, all children and their parents-in-law, grandparents, great-grandparents and, in some circumstances, uncles, aunts and their spouses, cousins, nieces and nephews. In other words, it could span up to six generations, with everyone related by blood or marriage. There is always a strong feeling of attachment between members of the same family despite the generation gap, which can be large or small. Grandparents and elderly parents are cared for until death (personal communication, July 26-29, 2015). The center of the family is a home that does not necessarily welcome everyone. The availability of living space determines the size of the family living together. But usually you find grandparents, father, mother, children and grandchildren living under the same roof.
