Animals are typically physically tortured by handlers in many different forms. The most common form of abuse is animals being mistreated by handlers for misbehaving or not doing what the handlers want the first time (ASPCA). This is an important reason why eaters should avoid meat. Animals are capable of thinking and feeling, nothing deserves to be abused, be it physical or emotional. Another common form of abuse is the mutilation of animals by cutting their teeth or amputating their tails. These changes are usually performed on animals, even if they are not given any type of anesthesia. (ASPCA). This means that animals are tortured without anything to ease their pain. One reason eaters don't become vegetarians is that they have the mentality that if they don't eat meat that won't stop other people from eating it. While this is true, it should be remembered that someone's beliefs and morals should always be the most important factor in their life when making decisions. Jonathan Safran Foer, an intermittent vegetarian, quotes his grandmother in his book Against Meat as saying, "If nothing matters, there's nothing to save." This quote comes from his grandmother after she told him that she refused to eat pork because she was Jewish, even though she was starving. Vegetarians believe that animals are not meant to serve humans and that the way they are treated is terrible. The lives of farm animals matter to them, and should matter to all eaters because they know what's going on but they'd rather walk away from it because they're ashamed. The best way to avoid this guilt is not to not think about it, but rather to recognize what is happening and stop supporting this abuse. The best way to clear your conscience is not to ignore the problem but to face it
