The director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Thomas P. Campbell, himself called one of his sculptures, “Tale”, “simply disgusting”. The beeswax sculpture depicts a woman crawling on the ground followed by a tail full of feces. Kiki Smith explains that it is never her intention to disgust or provoke anyone with her art, but the work represents humiliation and carries with it a personal inner feeling.
