When I turn on the evening news and hear about recent shootings or standoffs, I am struck. I often become sad, disappointed, or angry. While the emotions I feel are real, the extent of my grief usually ends there. Black Health Matters by Jenna Wortham has allowed me to understand that the emotions I feel may be insignificant compared to the effects on other individuals. Wortham describes an incessant rash and a trip to the emergency room, representative of the physical manifestations of stress associated with racism. I feel guilty just for feeling sad and angry and not being affected on a deeper level. I feel guilty when I think about the fact that unless a person I know is directly harmed in a racially driven event, I will probably never be affected more than feel strong emotions. I feel guilty that my skin color allows me to feel this way and that white privilege has protected me from numerous challenges and
