Topic > The cause and effects of long distance relationships

The effects of a long distance relationship can vary based on the different causes that present this relationship. One of the main causes of a long-distance relationship is dating a person who is on active duty in the military. Most long-distance relationships begin when both partners are together and one has to leave due to work obligations, such as employment or changing workstations. The effects of this type of relationship can vary from person to person. One effect would certainly be the lack of communication between partners. Another, would be loss of attraction as partners see other people while they are away. The most devastating effect could be the breakdown of a relationship that began strong when both spouses were together. A relationship with an active duty person can quickly turn into a long-distance relationship for simple reasons. One reason is moving and traveling to other countries for months at a time. These trips can range from six months to 15 months. Of course this is hard on the employed person, as well as the partner who is still at home. Of course the communication is there so the couple can still demonstrate affection for each other, but the time difference and occasional problems play a role in the breakdown of communication. Another cause is the soldier moving from one duty station to another, obviously if the couple was married then the partner will come, but if not you will have to leave your significant other behind. Canary and Marianne wrote that “Long-distance relationships (LDRs), in which daily face-to-face contact is not possible, are increasingly common in the United States, yet we know relatively little about the process used to maintain these relationships”… half of the document... ...there is commitment in these relationships that cause these harmful effects. But with the right amount of effort, most of the harmful effects can be avoided. Works CitedCanary, Daniel J. and Marianne Dainton.
