Although progress has been made since the 1970s, even today women are greatly undervalued and underutilized. Many social scientists insist that gender differences are social constructions (Chapman, 1975). These differences should not always be seen as negative. Gender identities help us define ourselves and others throughout our lives (Hawkins, 2013). Children are taught from an early age how to distinguish their own gender from another (Weitzman, Eifler, Hokada, & Ross, 1972). By further understanding whether these differences are significant, what causes these differences, and how these differences influence the emergence of leadership, society can learn how to better use our resources and effectively close the gender gap that hurts so many people. “The role of women in society has changed considerably over the last 40 years” and it is important to ensure that these changes take society in the right direction to create a better world (Coder,
