SLT theorist Bandura argues that we learn through observation of models, as opposed to behaviorist theorists, such as Pavlov and Skinner, who experimented on animals, then applied the same prerequisites for human learning. Another difference between the two theories is how they use physical discipline to suppress inappropriate behavior. Behaviorist theory may argue that parents can educate their children by rewarding good behavior and punishing bad behavior, however, this will only promote temporary compliance and not a permanent change in the child's behavior. Conversely, speech therapy theorists might argue that through modeling, physical punishment will allow the child to learn aggressive behavior. For example, if a parent spanks their child to change a certain type of behavior, that child is likely to do the same to influence the behaviors of others. Another difference between behaviorism and SLT is that SLT places more emphasis on learning from models. We learn from vivid, symbolic, and living models of various types. For example, a child watches his teacher perform a dance to learn it. Therefore, exposing children to positive role models can have a positive effect on children. Finally, speech therapy can explain how parents need to closely monitor the television programs their children are exposed to due to the observational learning that occurs.
