The first six chapters of The Great Gatsby demonstrate Gatsby's eternal and unconditional love for Daisy. But what about Daisy? Who does he love? And what about Tom? Does he love Daisy? Chapter seven answers these questions by comparing Daisy's relationship with Gatsby to the one she shares with Tom, ultimately foreshadowing Gatsby's fate. Much of the book so far has focused on Gatsby's love for Daisy, however chapter seven provides insights into Daisy's relationship with Tom. It is evident from the beginning that Daisy is unhappy in her marriage. Tom, far from the ideal husband, is not only chauvinistic and crude, but also very promiscuous. He blatantly and repeatedly cheats on her with several women, to the point that they move from Chicago to New York. Daisy herself is not so innocent, as she begins a brazen affair with Gatsby, going so far as to kiss him when Tom is in the next room, and effectively declaring that she "loved him [Gatsby]" in front of everyone: including her husband. .
