It is different from the appetitive soul because the lively soul would endure unpleasant conditions to win whatever is at stake (440d), aligning itself more with the rational soul (440e). However, the lively soul is different from the rational soul, in the sense that young children and animals are born with a great spirit, but develop rationality only later in life, if at all, and therefore the two cannot be synonyms (441b). The significance of mentioning children and animals in this topic is that they can be seen as somewhat pure and uncorrupted souls, and therefore can be used as an indicator of how the soul really is
