PrefaceThis article explores Haitian American culture and their quest for freedom and equality. Also, the origins of the first Haitian immigrants who migrated to America in search of: freedom, new opportunities, and freedom from slavery. Analyze how the Haitian people provided for themselves after settling in America. Additionally, you provide an in-depth look at their difficulties of living in the New World from the late 1700s to the present day; touching on a common misconception and negative connotation of Haitian American culture. Explore the current socioeconomic, political, educational, and social status of the Haitian-American group. The contributions the Haitian people have made to American society including; art, film, music, recipes, dance and history. What does it mean to be American? In today's society an American living in the United States differs in heritage, beliefs and attitudes. What makes America so fascinating is that the country's citizens are granted unalienable rights governed by the Constitution, including: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This form of freedom can be both a curse and a blessing for many Americans. For example, this may be evident in the music many Americans listen to, the many beliefs practiced by Americans, and the diverse political opinions shared by Americans that shape the nation. The music in America is like no other music in the world. The musical genre is limitless and varies in genres including: pop, rock n roll, hip-hop, country, blues and soul to name a few. During this time the island's black population rebelled against slavery and caused uproar across the country. Many whites, free blacks, and slaves fled by the thousands to American shores and settled in large French-speaking communities in New Orleans, Norfolk, Baltimore, New York City, and Boston. (page 20); This can be traced back to the historical events that led to the onset of the country's independence in 1804 and which had a profound impact on its development from then on. The rich history of the Haitian people had shaped the characterization of the Creole-speaking people, land, and civilization.
