Once deceased, patients from different cultures have different rituals, beliefs and customs. It is part of the nurse's best practice to honor and respect the family's cultures and beliefs to help address the situation. Different cultures perceive death differently. For example, in the Muslim community, rituals are performed that include bathing, shrouding the body, followed by prayer. Another example of cultural sensitivity is language. There are two types of language when communicating with patients; verbal and non-verbal. Culturally effective communication is a key factor in the nurse-patient relationship. For example, English may be the patient's second language; this could interfere with communication and add further stress to the situation for the patient. Healthcare providers may provide patients with an interpreter or phone line to ensure there is a clear understanding of the patient's treatment plan. This can improve patient outcomes and avoid disparities. The third example of how nurses can provide culturally sensitive care is to become aware of culturally sensitive diets. Many ethnic cultures have strict dietary guidelines. A nurse can simply consult on nutrition and help tailor a modified diet. This will show respect, in turn improving the level of comfort, trust and respect between nurse and patient. For example, the Islamic community does not eat pork, animals with cloven hooves, or alcohol.
