Should there be an age that defines the transition from childhood to adulthood? Recent studies have shown that the age for defining adulthood varies in different states and various organizations have proposed measures to set the age right, if we can all agree on one; or is there a fixed birth date for deciding to become an adult? In the eyes of the law, there must be certain standards for teenagers and young adults to receive accountability. As each individual child matures to their own level, the age of responsibility varies as it transpires into adulthood. Individuals grow up having different experiences as a result of different growing up environments and this translates into age maturity levels among peers. The “debate is ongoing as to whether the age of responsibility has been set too low” due to the increase in teen crime over the years (Greenblatt). The context in which one is raised can take into account one's morality and standards of responsibility, and a correctional institution is no way to grow up.
