Audre LordeIn our class discussions and readings, I learned that women were once in charge of the human race, women were part of a community, no race was inferior or superior, there were peace and harmony in the world until the advent of the patriarchal era, planning to take root in the land for a long time. Women have been violated of their identity, their race and their status in society. Men dominated the biblical stories, leaving Mary out. Thus begins the war between the races, women fight to regain their identity and to do so they start with writing. One of those women was Audre Lorde. Audre Lorde grew up in a very sheltered family. She was protected by her mother who believed that white people were not to be trusted. Seeing his mother as an idol, he did not dare to question her authority and obeyed her as she said. The crux was when Lorde was alone in college, that's when she fought racism and prejudice with her writing and her involvement in the sorority. Zami: A New Spelling of My Name by Audre Lorde, tells a story of Lorde's childhood in Harlem through her self-discovery and acceptance of her dark skin color, of being a lesbian and, above all, of her being a woman in the 1950s. As with her other works, Audre's Zami: A New Spelling of My Name was artistically produced and could be read as a poetic song. Audre presents the audience with her early life experiences of prejudice and self-discovery to identify her position and status in her world. Growing up, Lorde couldn't describe what it meant to be different; he didn't have the words to express the indifference he felt towards the world. Lorde's parents, particularly her mother, chose to ignore racism and protected their children from the shadow of racism through ne... middle of paper... refused to give women the right to own their own names and identity. Hence, the result was painful and outraged by the women who decided to unite all women through writing. Audre Lorde was one of these women. Not only did she help bring women's rights into existence, but she also helped those women who were still in the early stages of self-discovery. Zami: A New Spelling of My Name is a book that has gotten the recognition it deserves. It is a book that takes the public on a journey to discover themselves, friends and new words. Lorde did a phenomenal job of bringing those words to life as they spoke to their readers. They were the words of a young woman who was embarking on a tough journey that led to new opportunities. These opportunities allowed Lorde to free herself and incorporate her presence into the world. And Zami: A New Spelling of My Name is textual proof of its presence.
