Hard Times' 'The Dirty '30s' 'The Great Depression' (Ganzel n. pag.) This quote describes so much about the 1930s, especially the 'agriculture. Farming was hard because there was a terrible drought. If it rained outside, the crop couldn't grow. And the crops can't hold the soil together and not sweep it away. Which was really bad for the land to get washed away. Furthermore, the farmers did not know that the equipment they were using would tear up the soil too much and it would be swept away. Farming in the 1930s was bad because of the dust and the price of everything was low. Agricultural life in the 1930s was really hard for all farmers. They did a lot to get through the 1930s without starving. In York County they had no indoor bathrooms, lights or heat unlike people living in cities in the 1930s. (Reinhardt n. pag.) to feed themselves there, many families raised their own food such as chickens that gave them eggs, cows that also gave them beef and milk to drink. They grew vegetables from there in the garden. (Reinhardt n. pag.)Families who didn't do it themselves enlisted the help of neighbors who helped them along the way. Neighbors helped people along the way. Neighbors were very important in this period because if someone got sick or an accident happened there was someone to help them. (Reinhardt n. pag.) For school programs, church dinners or dances families and neighbors gathered. (Reinhardt n. pag.)There were many ways in which people spent their time. They did a lot of things like going to the movies, playing board games or listening to the radio, all for free. (Reinhardt n. pag.) in 1940 the rain was better and the federal government programs brought electricity into the home to make life much easier (Reinhardt n. pag.)
