Globalization 3.0 It has long been argued that globalization is the cause of many problems in the world, although this is true it is also incorrect and at the same time creates a paradox that requires a careful analytical examination. In the world we live in today, we are in what some have called humanity's third globalization event. What is globalization and how does it affect the world as a whole? Through the analysis of texts covered in class and from external readings, I will try to answer this question and explain how globalization is affecting the world and what it will mean in the long term for humanity and society as a whole. Taking the example of globalization as used in Barber's work, we can see that the globalization that is occurring in this time period is not the same as previous generations nor even periods of advancement in terms of globalization. We are experiencing a corporatization of the world as we know it in this new era of globalization, where in the past it was simply a major coming together of countries or ideas to better help each other in information or economics, now it is a corporate conjuncture to bring together the greatest possible financial benefit by eliminating all small businesses and independent shops. We are living in a “McWorld” as Barber would say. This involves multinational organizations coming together to increase their profits by simultaneously expanding and conglomerating into a monopoly. The argument he provides is that there are two types of societies in the modern world, those that have adhered to the “McWorld” model and those that have not, “Jihad”. While the term Jihad has traditional implications in the Muslim religion, it is defined only as a struggle within oneself to be... middle of paper... deciding whether we are content with the ability to have anything and everything at our fingertips while losing our identity and our freedoms in favor of multinationals and the powers they are able to control through lobbying and financing brutal regimes. Alternatively, will we adopt a new way of life that is more ecological, culturally independent and ultimately more difficult? For me, I say we need less information technology and lifestyle dependence here and now and to save our cultures, the environment and society as a whole by not engaging in corporate purchases and more buy local policies to help our communities before it becomes a crisis. scenario where we face total annihilation at the hands of large governments and corporations seeking to weaken the public mind and destroy our planet for long term survival bringing us all closer “A little closer together.”
