In King Arthur's time, knights fought for their kings. A knight was a special soldier who worked directly for the king. They were the best of the best. Although these knights were ferocious on the battlefield, they were expected to be the kindest of gentlemen when they did not lift their heads off the shoulders of opposing knights. There was a strict code of conduct that these men were obliged to follow. It was a code designed to prevent knights from committing the horrible crimes that sadly so many other soldiers committed so often. It was created to ensure that the men sworn to protect the royal family remained men of descent and honor. This code of chivalry consisted of three main ideas about how an honorable man should behave. Knights were required by code to be brave, honorable, and polite to women.
