Since Confucius' goal was to become a gentleman, he talks about how it is a lifelong commitment to which he had to dedicate himself. In the quote he also mentions how he can follow his desires without worrying about breaking the rules, because he has studied the rules for so long that they are ingrained in his mind. In modern society, we as a culture are always learning much like Confucius. In society, we are dedicated to a career and a life that is constantly changing and we have to learn how to adapt and change with it and then, eventually, life slows down and you can enjoy your time and do what you want with your time, making use of the knowledge acquired over the years of study. Master said, “Even if you have only coarse grains for food, water for drink, and your bent arm for pillow, you could still be happy. Riches and honors without justice are like fleeting clouds to me." (p. 774) In this quote, Confucius talks about how the simple things in life, such as food, water, and a place to sleep, are enough to be happy. The riches of the world are only temporary and should not bring happiness to a gentleman. We try to teach the same concept to our modern society. Society is told to be happy or grateful for what they have and not to want more, although this is hardly accepted in today's world.
