Is street art a real art form? Does it have the same emotional impact as museum art? There are many people who consider street art to be a form of vandalism and something that should be punished. However, after watching the film Exit Through the Gift Shop, I began to wonder why street art is not considered a true art form by much of the art community. Street artists convey messages in their work that push us to think critically so we can truly understand their meaning, just as fine art in museums does. The temporary nature of street art does not necessarily take away the emotional impact desired by the artist. What makes art, art, is not what it appears, but how the viewer perceives it. I believe you can't put a limit on art, no matter if it's in a museum or on a street corner, as long as there is creativity and authenticity and the viewer is challenged to think. Critical thinking is a very important aspect to understanding art. As David Perkins said in “The Intelligent Eye,” we must avoid “experimental thinking,” a hasty and rapid way of thinking based on observations, and use “reflective intelligence,” a way of thinking in which a spectator takes the his time and analyzes details and nuances to fully understand a work of art. Most viewers will look at a work of art and come up with a quick analysis of it, without thinking too much about it. But, according to Perkins, “The more careful the observation, the better the opportunity for deeper learning” (Perkins 14). As Banksy said in Exit Through the Gift Shop, “the reaction to the artwork is the most important thing.” Without a reaction or opinion, the work of art has no meaning. Therefore, for trul...... half of the card ......, but this should not detract from the overall perception of a piece. This critical deepening in thinking about art is one reason why "experimental intelligence needs reflective intelligence to manage its powers for a more complete perception of art and, more generally, to think better about anything" (Perkins 16). Art is not about what is visually there, but about the reaction to it. Without a reaction, the work of art has no purpose and is therefore meaningless. Exit Through the Gift Shop is a true testament to the power that street art holds to learn that street art provokes in its viewers, from Shepard Fairey's "Andre the Giant" sticker to Banksy's whimsical work, Elephant in the Room, we there are many forms of street art that provoke deeper thoughts just like fine art..
