Another philosophy of Aristotle concerned emotion and selective perception, summarized by BR Hergenhahn in the History of Psychology textbook (p.56-57). Aristotle brought awareness to emotion when he proposed that without emotion, humans might miss what is relevant (S. Nancy, 1989). He suggested that emotions influenced and intensified behavior. For example, people who are afraid tend to run faster after being threatened by a snake than when jogging calmly. When people are angry they have a tendency to argue because the emotion can drive the reason for the action. Anger can be excited by the hurt that someone has caused and fear aroused in the face of danger and both occurred due to the presence of the cognitive process. Aristotle added that emotion cannot be a blind feeling but intended by direct states. Furthermore, the way people perceive things can also be influenced by emotion and this is called selective perception. Virtues and vices can be included in one's perception of things or other people. According to the writer S.Nancy, 1989, “virtues are defined as states in which we are good or bad with respect to feelings”. For example, if someone hates the other, even for something good, they will deny the good side of that person due to the bad perception they have of that particular person. People can respond based on their emotional sensitivity to act in certain circumstances. Aristotle's important point about perception was that it is not just our perception of things that matters, but the perception and emotional impact of others on our presence determines whether we become vulnerable to them. Aristotle added that our for...... middle of paper ...... about the existence of the soul and its types and functions. Some scholars have limited themselves to expanding and providing more explanations on other ideas or theories. After all, their ideas and theories give inspiration and become a guideline to use in our daily lives. Third, the application of theories or ideas in daily life could be positive. Since Aristotle stated that perception should be a dual game, we also perceive from others how others perceive about us what is important. We must therefore take care of the feelings of others so that they do not consider our presence as a threat. Furthermore, if we know how important the idea of emotion guiding action is, we can learn to control excessive emotions such as anger, sadness and fear perhaps through positive thoughts because sometimes our emotions can be exaggerated or in another way by seeking help from healthcare professionals.
