Topic > Roughnecks: Oil Rig Workers - 3018

On a bright, sunny but breezy afternoon, I headed towards Mad Dog 4, an oil rig. The drilling rig, by definition, is a tower on top of the drilling rig used sometimes as a crane to move heavy equipment, but mostly to move pipe in and out of the hole, which is being drilled. It stands in the middle of a field, tall and white, like the Eiffel Tower, surrounded by large blue, yellow or white containers. There is a small sign letting anyone know that this is the entrance to Cade 21; the dirt route consists of all trucks, which move the plant to its current location. There are around 30 different companies that assist in the construction of the location where the plant is located. The average speed along this route is 10 miles per hour. If any of the supervisors see dirt flying, someone will be in trouble. This route is only wide enough for one vehicle, so sometimes you have to wait a bit to go in the opposite direction. Since it is on virgin ground, meaning not much has been traversed, the journey to the platform is bumpy and bumpy. Several large, oversized containers surround the oil rig, most resembling rail cars, seen on trains as they pass on the tracks, and are considered buildings. These buildings serve as anything from a room where someone can mix gel and caustic with mud, along with a platform where a man from the Peak company goes from time to time to check on these mud mixtures. This is an important step, because the fluids are there to decrease the friction of the drill bit shaking in the Earth, and act as a lubricant. There are other rail cars used for things like a boiler room, which creates the steam lines; along with one called the lighthouse, on which a satellite dish is placed and which supports the power generators in… middle of paper… screw.
