Have you ever heard of Edgar Allan Poe, the poet of darkness and fear? Well, what you are about to read will take you back in time to the age of Edgar Allan Poe himself and how he came to be. This will tell you who he was before he became known as a writer and poet. Although Poe is famous for his books, he was also an editor of numerous magazines before starting his writing career. He will tell you about his dark and mysterious past and some of the possible ways he died. So come in and let's take a trip back in time. It is January 19, 1809. Edgar Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Elizabeth Poe and David Poe Jr. William Henry Leonard Poe (he was usually called Henry) was Edgar's older brother. On December 20, 1810, Rosalie (also called Rosie or Rose) Poe was born in Norfolk, Virginia. Nearly a year later, on December 8, 1810, their mother Elizabeth died in Richmond, Virginia. The cause of his death is unknown but it is speculated that pneumonia was a possible cause of death. Then, within a few days of his wife, (allegedly December 10) David Poe Jr., their father passes away. So Edgar is taken in by John and Frances Allan who never legally adopt him but he calls them his parents anyway. On January 7, 1812, Edgar Poe was baptized and baptized as Edgar Allan Poe and the Allans were still his godparents. (Edgar Allan Poe Chronology)In 1814 Poe began, at the age of five, the beginning of his formal education with his teacher Clotilda or Elizabeth Fisher at the school of Mr. William Ewing. On 22 June 1815 John and Frances Allan with Edgar and Frances' younger sister Ann Fisher moved to England on the Lothair.
