This is a big culture shock for me because students in Taiwan rarely express their opinion and share personal thoughts. When teachers ask random questions, we Taiwanese students usually sit silently in our seats and wait for the answer. Critical thinking in the classroom is something we lack because we are used to receiving answers right away without thinking about it, let alone raising our hand to ask or answer questions. I found a reason why I am silent in class because I am still stuck in the language conversion period. Sometimes I think in my native language, Mandarin Chinese, and it would take me a long time to convey what is really on my mind in English. Therefore, it is sometimes a problem for me to speak or write fluently. However, I noticed the importance of self-defense from the first few weeks of school. I know in my heart that if I am willing to adapt to this new environment and succeed in the future, I must overcome the language obstacles in front of me.
