The Depression of the 1930s was a time in history when the American people suffered. The economy was in decline with an increase in deaths due to malnutrition and disease. Unemployment plagued the nation. According to Gunderson & Cory (4) the situation worsened until the government intervened. The intervention changed the government's role in safeguarding the population from economic decline. Depressions served as an opportunity for the government to get its mandate and allow people to reflect on its significance in stabilizing the economy. It is important to allow laissez-faire leadership in the functioning of government as it has been supported by Treasury Secretary Andrea Mellone. The Depression in America was approached with a conservative approach, as noted by Farmer & Brian (225). Then, President Herbert Hoover urged Americans to volunteer to help each other. Hoover refused to give direct support to the American people. He failed to control businesses through taxes and never manipulated the value of currency (Hoover). Hoover never embraced socialism because he knew that would lead to it. During the next election, Hoover attempted to convince people that his actions were aimed at strengthening the subsidy rather than weakening it. This approach never worked during the Great Depression as Americans suffered the most. The approach also gained support from the government, but failed to achieve results. The strategy adopted by President Herbert led to his failure in the next elections as he failed to convince the people of his action during the depression. It is important to use new strategies that facilitate solving the problem. This requires integrating the expansive approach into governance. If the conservative were... a paper government... and a society for peaceful coexistence. It is beneficial if leaders use both approaches to solve a similar problem. The conservative and expansive approach in problem solving will ensure that sufficient options are weighed in finding the solution. I am very much in favor of incorporating the two approaches, conservative and expansive in solving the problem and therefore take a middle path. Both approaches are necessary in their own ways.
