Genitals Human papillomavirus (also known as HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI). It is technically not a sexually transmitted disease but can lead to other types of HPV. HPV is usually transmitted through oral, vaginal, or anal sexual activity. This virus is highly contagious and if it goes unnoticed it can be transmitted to partners. One can abstain sexually, but the infection will remain in the body and can be easily transmitted once the infected person has genital contact with a partner. HPV is also transmitted equally through heterosexual and homosexual couples. The person who has multiple partners is more likely to spread the virus because they are not aware of their sexual health. The reason there has been an increase in HPV infections is because HPV does not always manifest physical symptoms (http://www.cdc.gov/hpv/whatishpv.html). Once a person becomes infected, the body's immune system will try to prevent getting a physical reaction by fighting it with its own antibodies, however, if the body is defeated, warts will appear around the infected area on the external body. HPV will produce warts that vary from genital warts, common warts, plantar warts and flat warts. Each of the types occurs based on the contact from which the infected person gets it. The appearance of warts has an equally grotesque appearance and texture. Additionally, these warts can also be painful and prone to bleeding if they are picked. However, there are some types that cause no discomfort and go unnoticed, such as genital warts, which is why they go unnoticed by the infected person (www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hpv-infection/basics/symptoms).
