According to Ifemelu there are two different types of blacks in America, African Americans and African Americans. An African American is a person of color is an African who immigrated to America and was not born in America. An African American is a person of color whose ancestors were slaves born in America. African Americans were not as intelligent as an African American because education in America is very different from that in Nigeria. When Ifemelu was talking to Dike, Ifemelus' cousin, about what he had learned in school. “He once asked Dike what he had done in school before the summer and he replied, “Looks.” They sat on the floor in a circle and shared their favorite things. She was shocked. "Do you know how to divide?" He looked at her strangely. “I'm only in first grade, Coz.” When I was your age I knew how to do simple division. (Adiche 138). She was surprised to learn that he learned about circles only because children in Nigeria did simple division. This suggests that education in Nigeria is at an accelerated pace while in America children learn at a very slow pace. In America the school systems are different and much simpler than the school system in Nigeria according to Ifemelu. She is surprised that American children are given homework passes and take a long time to learn the important things they need to learn. He even tries to convince Dike to eat bananas and peanuts, which is a food they eat in Nigeria. “No,” he said firmly. “I don't think I like Nigeria, Coz.” (Adiche 139) His cousin Dike is now institutionalized and thinks that Nigeria is strange and that the things they do in America are normal, he only believes it because he is a
