When an object is expressed or represented by different ideas it is called symbolism. Symbolism is used everywhere. For example, symbolism is used in physics when you have this equation W=Fxd. The letter W represents the amount of work done by the force, F represents the force on the object when it is in motion, and represents the distance the object moves while the force acts on it. Another example is the traffic light: every traffic light symbolizes something, red means stop, yellow is for precaution and green means go. Symbolism can also be in sports, for example, in football when the referee gives you a red card it symbolizes that you are out of the game because you committed a foul. In the story Mama Johnson and Maggie are waiting for Dee in the yard. . Dee had gone to school in Augusta and it was her first time visiting them. When Dee arrives, Mama Johnson is surprised because Dee tells her that she has changed her name to Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo. While Mama Johnson and Maggie think Dee has come to visit them, Dee only wants to get family items that are useful for artwork. The conflict began when Dee wanted to take some quilts that had been quilted by Grandma Dee and Big Dee. Mama Johnson disagrees with Dee because she promised Maggie quilts for when she gets married. In “Everyday Use,” Alice Walker uses symbolism to show how important culture and family history are to Mama Johnson and Maggie. The characters in the story are an example of symbolism. Mama Johnson is Dee and Maggie's mother. Alice Walker describes Mama Johnson as “a big-boned woman with rough, manly hands.” Mama Johnson is symbolized as a true representation of heritage. According to Julie... half of the paper... ect and family history were, she just wanted the stuff for the artwork. Mama Johnson and Maggie were a true representation of their family and culture.
