The Story of an Hour is full of irony and symbolism. Irony is a figure of speech in which the expression of something is made contrary to its intended meaning. Symbolism is the applied use of symbolic icon representations that carry a particular conventional meaning. The term symbolism is often limited to use in contrast. All symbolic concepts can be seen in relationships where change in context can imply a systemic change in the individual and collective definition of the symbol. This lady had a heart problem, she found out that her husband was in a train wreck, she was sad but then she realized that she was finally free, she wasn't sad like people, even though she was, she was actually happy that she could delay a new life. She is shocked when she discovers that her husband is not dead. The lady died of joy that kills, well that's what the doctor said. Louise Mallard was a woman who had a heart problem and here she found out that her husband had been killed in a train accident but she didn't take it as they would have. I have though.Mrs. Mallard is really happy that her husband is dead and instead looks forward to the next year when she will be free. Mallard is described as young and with a rather calm face. It symbolizes beauty and innocence. Brently Mallard repressed her and, despite the tragically smiling event, she is freed from his dominion over her and is able to move on with her life. The reader feels compassion for her when she explains how she had loved him only sometimes, but more often not, and how the next year she would be able to live for herself and no one else. The fact that Mrs Mallards has her '''heart ailments'' should be considered more significant than the simple idea that she is ill.
