FencesAt first glance the title Fences appears to be the ordinary title of a play written by August Wilson. By the end of the game, however, the title is more than just a title. One of the most important symbols of the work is the fence built by Troy and his son Cory. The fence serves as a plot structure as the character's life changes throughout the game during the construction of the fence. The title “Fences” represents the symbolic fences that the main characters build around themselves to hold people back or prevent them from interfering. “Fence” may seem like a simple title, but after reading the work it becomes obvious that it is a complex symbol that summarizes the entire work. Playwright August Wilson uses the physical fence to show its many symbolic meanings. The symbolism of the fence is mainly used to represent Troy in the play.
