Community service is an invaluable experience that everyone should have. Through community service you can help yourself by helping others. You learn your strengths and weaknesses, as well as everything you learn about others and the world. During my sixty hours of service at Colleges Against Cancer, I learned a lot. Community service with CAC has been extremely beneficial. I feel like it has helped me better understand the struggles of other individuals and understand how even a little help can make a huge difference. Every year thousands of people are diagnosed with cancer. This disease dramatically alters the lives of not only those diagnosed, but also those who care for that individual. CAC works really hard to spread awareness of this fact and help raise money for research in an effort to cure cancer. It's truly inspiring and helpful to know that even your small effort can make a huge difference in these people's lives. Another benefit of being in CAC was being able to participate in something much bigger than yourself, Relay for Life. Being part of something like this helps put everything in perspective. It allows you to reevaluate any difficulties you may be facing so you can see how small they may actually be in the grand scheme of things. Being a part of all the Relay for Life events since I arrived in Elmira has been a truly humbling experience and I feel it is a great benefit to volunteer your time to such an organization. Working with CAC over the past two years has made me realize that this is the kind of thing I would like to dedicate my time to as often as possible in the future. Raising cancer awareness and raising money for cancer research is something that with... middle of paper... is impossible. Volunteers are the ones who do most of the fundraising. As part of the Relay for Life committee for this year's Relay, I can attest to the fact that without all the volunteers and their efforts leading up to and especially the day off, Relay for Life would not exist. They do so much work for the organization and really make a difference. Entering Elmira College, I wonder what sixty hours of community service could do for me. However, now that I have completed these hours, I can honestly say that it was one of the most enlightening and character-building experiences I have ever had. We don't realize the good we can do until we have the opportunity to see it. Relay for Life and CAC have shown me that I can make a difference. Community service is worthwhile and should be completed by everyone at some point in their lives.
