Avery WellsProfessor WilkenfeldEnglish 10202/08/14“All men and women are created equal”On July 4, 1776 it was said that all men are created equal. What the Declaration of Independence did not mention were women. This seemed to be a common theme throughout America's history and is still a problem to this day. Men are constantly held on a pedestal, while women are forced into the position of looking up to them. Zombieland (2009) tends to take these "old school" ways and shed a new light on the fact that women can also be equal to, if not better than, some men. To give you a quick summary Zombieland is a movie about four main characters, Witchita, Little Rock, Tallahassee and Columbus. Little Rock and Witchita are both female, while Tallahassee and Columbus are both male. The film focuses on the adventures that these four main characters must go through to kill all the zombies that have taken over their land to save the human race. As silly as this movie may seem, my family and I found that there was a much more important point the director was trying to make. The director was trying to make it clear that women can be just as powerful as men, at least that's my interpretation of the film. Although many scenes in Zombieland show women as inferior and dependent on men, I feel that women are also depicted as being as strong as men and are often seen transcending the stereotype imposed on them. This was evident in many situations where two of the main female characters, Wichita and Little Rock, often outsmarted the two main male characters, Tallahassee and Columbus. Little Rock and Wichita often acted like they needed Tallahassee and Columbus... middle of paper... Rock tricked the man at the gas station into giving them money using their good looks and charm. Ultimately, Zombieland can be a lesson for our founding fathers. They would learn to look at women in a new light. They would not see them as small, dependent people. Instead, they would see that they demand respect, just as men do and just as all people should. They would see them as independent and more than capable human beings on this earth. In fact, I believe that if our founding fathers had seen Zombieland, they too would agree that the only people who should be disenfranchised are zombies. They would see that women are just as equal as men. If this new perspective had been discovered earlier, one of the most important documents in history, the Declaration of Independence, would be seen with the following words: “All men and women are created equal”.
