Teen pregnancy is surprisingly decreasing over the years. According to Farber, “the most recent studies have shown that there has been a decrease in the rate of pregnancy among all adolescents and among sexually active adolescents (16). Although this problem seems to be decreasing, it is still a problem faced by many teenage girls today. Every year, 7.5% of women between the ages of 15 and 19 become pregnant (Maynard 1). Only 40% of teen mothers graduate from high school (teen pregnancy impacts graduation rates). The 60% of teen mothers not finishing high school not only affects their future, but also the future of their unborn child. The best solution to making teen pregnancy obsolete and saving the future of many teenage girls is abstinence. Abstinence is the best solution because this solution has four benefits: it is most effective, it teaches other important life skills, it helps teenagers in school, and it stops the spread of sexually transmitted diseases among teenagers. According to Lawton, “abstinence means not having sexual intercourse (vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse) at any time” (25). This answer is a surefire way to improve teen pregnancy rates. Those who pledge to abstain usually use this form of contraception until marriage. It has proven to have maximum effectiveness. Unlike condoms and birth control pills, abstinence is 100% guaranteed prevention. Birth control pills have a very high effectiveness rate.
