Breastfeeding is when the mother nourishes her baby with milk from her breast. Breastfed babies typically eat between 8 and 12 times in a 24-hour period (Lindsay 150). According to Stuhldreher: “Before the 18th century, human milk was the only source of infant nutrition. If a mother did not breastfeed, a woman called a nurse nursed her child” (Stuhldreher, Par.19). Since the 19th century, a new mother could decide whether to breastfeed or feed her baby formula. If a mother can breastfeed, she should do so for the sake of her child and herself. Many studies show that breastfeeding is beneficial to both mother and baby in many ways (Stuebe 156). Breastfeeding is an essential step in ensuring good health for mother and baby. Many organizations such as the American Academy of Family Physicians recommend breastfeeding for at least the first six months of a child's life (Stuebe 155). The World Health Organization, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Healthy People 2010 also promote breastfeeding for at least the first six months of a child's life (Belfield 251). The American Academy of Pediatrics believes that children should be breastfed for at least the first year of life and then, if appropriate, after the first year (Steinkraus, Par.5). As Deoni, assistant professor at Brown University, said: “I think I would say that combined with all the other evidence, it appears that breastfeeding is absolutely beneficial” (Stacy, Para. 13). According to a study that used brain images from MRI machines, a baby who was only breastfed had better brain development than a baby who was fed both breast and formula. Breastfeeding and formula together is better than... middle of paper... moms who are able to do it should at least try it for the baby's well-being. Breastfeeding benefits the mother and baby in many ways, such as weight loss for the mother and proper nutrient intake for the baby. The mother can also reduce the chance of developing cancer and diabetes. The child may acquire a better immune system and will perform better academically. It creates a loving and supportive bond between mother and baby. The immune system, brain function, socialization, and overall long-term health are stabilized throughout the breastfeeding period (Godfrey 1307). Many organizations promote breastfeeding for at least the first six months of a baby's life, and many studies show the increased brain development and skills that breastfed babies develop that formula-fed babies lack. All mothers should breastfeed if they are able to.
