Topic > Jazz and Political Connections - 1028

Jazz has been a genre we have been studying for the past couple of weeks. During these weeks I have acquired new knowledge that has interested me in this genre. I never considered jazz to be a political musical style, nor did I know that there were songs that contained political messages. Discovering that these different songs and that jazz have some aspect of political style intrigued me to write about this genre. Through the many artists and songs we have studied about this genre there have been some ways in which jazz has incorporated political styles into the genre. Historical moments and events that occurred in the past are ways that jazz musicians have incorporated political styles into their music. For example, racism has been a big problem in past history and has affected the lives of many African Americans. Billie Holiday managed to bring out this tragic slavery of African Americans and describe how they were treated in the 1920s. Strange Fruit, a poem by Abel Meeropol, later taken up by Billie Holiday and turned into a song, is one of the ways in which jazz has become incorporated into political discourse. This song describes the lynching of African Americans in the South and a protest against the inhumanity of racism. Billie Holiday singing this song and introducing this type of musical text to her audience brings up the political issue of racism and the inhumane treatment they have suffered. She was able to inform people about what really happened to African Americans in the past and is able to tell the story of what many African Americans had to endure. When we talk about racism it is just a brief overview of the segregation of whites and blacks. He doesn't actually go into detail about the beatings and punishments they suffered. Songs......center of the card......thetical like Strange Fruit and Fables of Faubus due to the political issues they discuss. It's nice to listen to songs that talk about events from the past. They can be very informative and enhance the musical by telling a story. I believe that giving music a political subject has improved the musical style because music can illustrate a narrative or tell a story, encourage a certain emotional reaction in the audience and even communicate something that is not shown. I liked learning about jazz because it causes different emotions when you listen to it and I liked the sounds of the different instruments found there: saxophone, trumpet, guitar, harmonica, etc. Jazz is an interesting genre and music that contains political connections is fascinating to listen to. Jazz is a genre I will continue to look into and find more artists and songs to listen to as well.
