Topic > Ethics and the impact of personal ethics in the workplace

Take care of every patient with the same treatment of respect and dignity, regardless of their origin or socioeconomic background. Consequently, holding their individual rights to the highest possible standard. As a nurse, I am committed to the patients I care for. Have a goal to make everyone successful in their journey to becoming as healthy as possible. An example that comes to mind is when I worked in the intensive care unit (ICU). While receiving the report from the absent nurse, I was told more about the patient's socioeconomic status, her odor, and that the staff had placed her in the room furthest from the nurses' station because she smelled of cat urine and cigarette smoke . The nurse reported that she had only checked on the patient once during the time she had been on the unit and that the patient was not that sick. After finishing the report, I proceeded to complete an assessment and check on the patient hourly as I would for any other patient in the ICU. The patient ended up going into hypovolemic shock and had to be transferred to a larger hospital. If I had only checked the patient every four hours, as this was the minimum for the unit, it is likely that this patient would have died. Thanks to my ethics, values and morals, the patient survived the night and was able to return to her family later that same day.
