It was April 22, 2014, and it began like any other day. I had just gone to bed with my mother as I usually did after waking up on school days, only to find her solemn and hear her say, "Debbie, Ethan was shot last night and was found dead at the scene." I remember lying in bed and letting those words sink in as I tried to fully understand how this would change my life and my community. The words my mother spoke quickly rocked my world like a snowball and it took me a while to calm down. Ethan was a family friend, one I had known for most of his short life on this earth. He was only 12 years old; however, he did not let age hold him back; he enjoyed coming to youth group with his older sister and hanging out with us older teenagers. He could make an intelligent argument that exuded wisdom beyond his years. And honestly he was the life of the party, but he was the life of the party in a way that brought others back to his faith in God. Needless to say, his death had a huge impact on my community.
