Leaders. On what basis are they classified? Is it their good looks, their IQ or their physical fitness? Partly, but good leaders are classified based on their morals, qualities and actions. The characteristics of a good leader are honesty, commitment, intuition, trust, the ability to delegate, good communication and courage, to name a few. The boys on the island needed a leader who could help them survive, stay healthy, and ultimately lead them back to safety and civilization. In the story, Ralph is a better leader than Jack, as he possesses more qualities of a good leader and is better suited to lead the island boys into society. These qualities include responsibility, leading by example, unpretentious sincerity, interactive and dynamic communication, and determination to find a way off the island. Jack, on the other hand, retains qualities such as irresponsibility, leadership by force, dishonesty, brutal and degrading communication, and intent to stay on the island. For starters, Ralph is one of the most, if not the most, responsible and hard-working person on the island. He works relentlessly at the task at hand until it is completed, regardless of the time, the immensity of the task, or the amount of assistance he is receiving. An example of his perseverance and commitment is demonstrated in chapter 3, when Ralph and Jack discuss the work done on the island. Ralph began by saying, “Do you remember the meeting? How was everyone going to work hard until the shelters were completed?" Jack replied, "Except me and my hunters," followed by Ralph's rebuttal, "I've been working with Simon all day. No one else."
