Deception and Fall The definitive death of a man is caused by the use of deception for the happiness of others. In Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac, Cyrano loves Roxane, but is too afraid to tell her of his love because of her appearance. She eventually resorts to helping Christian love Roxane by writing her words to him, leading to the two getting married. However, Roxana vows that she will never love another man and lives in a convent after Christian's death in battle, leaving Cyrano loveless for fifteen years, until shortly before his death. Cyrano's insecurities regarding his appearance prevent him from being honest, proving that his use of deception leads to ruin, misery, and death. Cyrano is too insecure to tell Roxane that he loves her, instead deceiving her into thinking that Christian is the perfect Man. Cyrano allows Christian to use his words as if they were his own, saying, "Will you dare repeat to her the words / That I gave you, day by day?" (99).
