In Oliver Stone's 1987 classic Wall Street, there is a monologue that will transcend time and will forever be associated with Wall Street and the ultra-rich. “Greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all its forms; the greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the rise of humanity”. This dramatic speech was given by Gordon Gekko (played by Micheal Douglas), a wealthy businessman, who through this speech is trying to convey the message that greed leads to overall personal and economic growth. However, many wonder if this is true, can greed ever truly be good? Also, is director Oliver Stone trying to make a statement about corporate America and the ultra-rich? Is greed a good thing? well it depends on how you look at it and the people you talk to. Greed, as defined by Webster's dictionary, is “the selfish and excessive desire for more than is necessary.” Many businessmen around the world believe that greed is the driving incentive for any person to produce a product. These people believe that if we didn't have greed, no one would bother going to school or work, because what would be the point? There would be no driving factor to make a person want to do something. However, businessmen have a flaw in their arguments: they believe that money is the only incentive for a person to do anything. Their mind cannot comprehend the thought of a person being generous or charitable when they are unable to receive monetary compensation. They don't understand why people donate their money to charity or volunteer. I am unable to conceive that a person... middle of paper... is a really bad thing, Oliver Stone sent Gordon Gekko to prison for insider trading, further adding to his point that greed is bad, and those who are greedy will be caught. Oliver Stone uses Gordon Gekko as a symbol of corporate greed in the United States, culminating in Gekko's famous monologue. Stone, however, disagrees with that monologue's main theme that greed is good. I also believe that greed is not good. Watching the world, especially these days, corporate bankers are getting million dollar bonuses while their companies go bankrupt, their clients default on their loans is one of the sickest and most disturbing acts of greed the world has ever seen. I don't think anyone who lived through the past recession will ever consider greed a good thing. Greed is the inventor of injustice as well as the actual guarantor.
