After reading Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, it is clear to see the true horrors behind all slavery. It's one thing to learn about it from a textbook or attend a lecture, but it's an entirely different experience to get an account of how grossly inhumane, appalling, and frightening slavery was from someone who experienced the terrors firsthand. . Reading this account provided extremely descriptive details about how slaves were truly treated. Douglass told of the time he had often been: "he had been awakened at the dawn of day by the most heart-rending cries of one of my aunts, whom he used to tie to a rafter and whip her bare back until he was literally covered in blood. No words, none no tear, no prayer, from his bloody victim, seemed to divert his iron heart from his bloody purpose... [he remembered] the first time [he had] witnessed this horrible display [He] was a beautiful child, but [he] remembers it well.(7) Douglas was sure that he was not the only one experiencing family, friends, and even himself...
