Community Service and Why It Should Be Required to GraduateEnglish 11B5th HourNichole Sleight3-31-14Have you ever wondered why you didn't get the job you wanted? How would you feel if you knew that a recent graduate got that job because he was more qualified than you? High school students who perform community service, which is required to graduate, are increasingly becoming certified for jobs because they get all kinds of different experiences. From volunteering in local gardens, to serving the elderly and cleaning the streets, they manage to serve and dedicate their time to the community. What is community service? The dictionary definition is: 'Voluntary work, intended for the common good, usually done as part of an organized programme.' ("Collins English Dictionary") People all over the country are doing community service for church activities, for scouts, and because it's what the judge ordered. Why not let the students do the same, there is certainly no shortage of services to be done. If someone wanted to become a dental hygienist after graduation, they could volunteer at the local dental office starting at the bottom, taking out the trash, and working their way to the top and assisting the hygienist. They could ask questions, gain real-life experience and shave off some hours of service. This would help them gain up-to-date real-life knowledge that they would not learn in a classroom with a textbook. School alone can't help you in every situation you encounter later in life, service helps you develop skills and help your community. Employers look for things like community service, information technology, and social skills when looking at a resume. Having things like that says t...... middle of paper ......inheriting his things, or even cleaning up the bus after a game on the road. To get these extra hours all you need is for your coach or a teacher to see you doing these things and sign your sheet. There is nothing better than helping the school custodian. Some students leave trash on the table after lunch and leave it for the custodian to collect. This takes a lot of time on their part and is not very nice on the part of the students. Some students, after lunch, can go and help the janitors and collect the rubbish around the seats and clean the crumbs from the table. Do this every day and your service hours will increase quickly and you won't have to worry about it later. Community service should be required in every high school in America, for these reasons and many more. Not only students would benefit, but also employers, communities, seniors, neighbors, friends and relatives.
