Piracy in Somalia occurred due to years of infighting and a weakened government. With the overthrow of the president in 1991, Somalia became complete anarchy, with only the laws of rival clans remaining in power. Although long before the country has been in constant war between the people of the country because money and food have always been scarce. Small amounts of money were earned through some exports, but the real money came from fishing off the coast. Recently, due to a lack of laws, commercial fishermen around the world have overfished the waters, leaving Somalis with too few fish to survive. European companies have used this lack of laws as a way to easily dispose of their waste. This has caused illness and death among Somalis living near the water. The Somalis, without food, money or leaders, had no choice but to turn to piracy. Piracy, of course, has made the world look down on Somalis as a terrible and greedy people, but they have no other options to do so. keep their families alive. It may be the wrong thing to do, but other countries are doing equally bad things that don't get the negative media attention the way Somalis do. The world doesn't see Somalia so kindly, so it looks away from people dumping waste in their waters. This waste has caused disease, mutation, and death in newborns, and after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of people died after old nuclear barrels washed onto land (Hari). This dumping started as soon as the government fell and there was no one to stop these people from dumping. If no one else wants to help the Somalis, then they will have to do it themselves. Without a big government... middle of paper... the Royal Navy along with American and Chinese ships are planning to enter Somalia and fight the pirates of Somalia and essentially prevent them from having a chance of becoming a country capable of fight for himself (Hari). If we attacked them they would be in the same position they are in now and will continue to fight for survival, but now they would have no protection from other countries. The only thing they could do is capture more pirates, it's not that Somalia is against pirates, the vast majority of Somalis are on the pirates' side because it's the only thing keeping them alive. If we used the ships that are about to attack them to defend themselves from the dumpers and fishermen, then they could start rebuilding. It seems that the world thought of the quickest solution to the problem and did not think about why the Somalis would do this, other than the fact that they are more greedy.
