In our current culture, and throughout history, there has been a huge emphasis on masculinity. This is natural because of the male dominant culture that has been prevalent since the dawn of human civilization. This is also the case with Haggard's She and Achebe's Things Fall Apart. Examining both Holly and Okonkwo, they both express pure masculinity, but the ways in which they display their masculinity as well as the role that masculinity plays in their identities are very different. Okonkwo displays an inheritor of masculinity due to his own insecurities and unleashes his wrath on those close to him, while Holly's masculinity is unleashed in times of need and in the hunt. All his life, Okonkwo was ashamed of his father, Unoka. Throughout his life, Unoka was a poor and lazy man and was unable to support his family, which in Umofia society was seen as one of the most shameful things a man could do. Growing up Okoknow was embarrassed and swore he was the exact opposite of his father. He was afraid that he too would one day become the man (or lack of man) that his father was (Achebe 15). This motivated him to become one of the greatest fighters and warriors Umofia had ever had. He embodied masculinity, which was highly valued in his society. He was a self-made man, prosperous and highly respected in all the nine villages. This respect earned him the title of war emissary. His entire life and successes were earned due to the fact that “his entire life was dominated by fear, by fear of failure and weakness” (Achebe 13). Nyame argues: “Okanakwo's masculinity becomes a defensive asset and his adherence to a masculine philosophy will henceforth bring order to his... paper center...... in which they display masculinity as well as role that masculinity has in their identities is very different. Okonkwo displays an inheritor of masculinity to mask his own insecurities regarding his father's failures and fear of becoming the same man his father was. Masculinity ruled his life and anyone in his clan or family he considered weak or any man he considered feminine suffered the full wrath of his angry alpha male outbursts. The difference between Holly and Okonkwo is that while Okonkwo displays his masculinity to mask his insecurities and maintain order, Holly only expresses his masculinity when he is trapped in a life-or-death situation or when he is hunting. The only people Holly hurts are those who pose an immediate threat to her life, while with Okonkwo no one is safe from her outburst of rage..
