A Civil Action: A Legal Thriller of the DecadeJustice was created to investigate the truth and provide justice to the people. However, the truth and the judicial process do not always go hand in hand. In the book A Civil Action, the author, Jonathan Harr, portrays the dark side of our justice system. Here, Harr presents the true story of a group of families who file a civil lawsuit against two large corporations, but during the trial their truth is manipulated and proven meaningless by the tactics of court procedures. Published in 1996, this is some of Harr's best work. It is very engaging and, above all, Harr's in-depth description helps the reader of all backgrounds understand the legal proceedings of the case. The book begins with Jan Schlicthmann, an attorney for the Woburn families, awaiting the verdict on the case. He is the main narrator of the story and his character is well represented by a lawyer who at the beginning is very cynical in accepting the case of those who give up everything for the truth and justice for the families of Woburn, who lost their children due to Leukemia. Schlicthmann and his clients believe the illness was caused by drinking water from wells G and H, which was contaminated with chemicals disposed of by the Beatrice Foods and WR Grace tannery. The story unfolds very interestingly from Schlicthmann's point of view. When the case was brought to his attention, Schlicthmann refused to defend it, stating that it is a political battle and not a legal one (Harr, 1996; p. 69). As he learns more about the case, he ignores his colleague's suggestions and takes the case. At first they had no financial resources, but with the help of his clients he finds some resources, but in... half of the paper's perspective... it creates a lot of frustration towards the judge and the judicial system. Therefore, Harr could have explored more about the justice system to give readers some relief. In the book, Harr seems reluctant to express his point of view on the case, or perhaps it is his writing style that lets readers make their own reflections. Although Harr presents the story from one perspective, he gives readers great insight into our justice system. Throughout the book the author presents a very detailed and in-depth description of the characters and events. The book is very engaging and explores various topics such as corporate social responsibility, civil cases and injustice in the justice system. Having said that, this book could be very useful for people of different backgrounds. Works Cited: Harr, J. (1996). A civil action. Vintage books.
